Former New York Red Bulls and US U-20 national team goalkeeper coach Des McAleenan has passed away, leading to an outpouring of support across the MLS and American soccer communities.
McAleenan, 53, was originally from Dublin, Ireland and worked closely with US men’s national team stars Tony Meola and Tim Howard. He logged nearly 10 years with the Red Bulls.
McAleenan played college soccer at Central Connecticut State University, then embarked on a brief professional playing career. His coaching résumé included stops with Colombia’s national team and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
