BRADENTON, FLA. --
The Chicago Fire defeated the Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 Saturday in a preseason scrimmage at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. Forward Brian McBride scored the game-winning goal for the Fire off a penalty kick in the eighth minute of the match.
In the eighth minute, forward Patrick Nyarko suffered a foul inside the 18-yard box and the Fire were awarded a penalty kick opportunity. McBride placed his shot low and to the right of the Islanders' goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
The Fire nearly doubled the lead in the 62nd minute as midfielder Justin Mapp sent a corner kick from the left side toward the far post and C.J. Brown headed the ball back to the left for McBride positioned just off the right post. McBride also headed the ball, redirecting it into the net but the goal was called back due to an offside call.
The Fire will next face Toronto FC on Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. CT in Bradenton, Fla.
