Fiorentina narrowly edged out Bologna in Sunday's Derby dell'Appennino to notch up their first victory of the new Serie A season.
Alberto Gilardino's headed effort eight minutes before the interval was all that separated the sides after both teams hit the woodwork in the first half.
Martin Jorgensen started as expected for the hosts while Stevan Jovetic was handed his first start with Adrian Mutu dropping to the bench.
Bologna coach Daniele Arrigoni decided to leave former Fiorentina midfielder Christian Amoroso on the bench in favour of Massimo Marazzina.
Jovetic enjoyed the first chance of the game in the third minute after Marco Donadel played in the Montenegrin youngster who fired into the side-netting.
Bologna came close to notching the opener five minutes later as Sergio Volpi crossed from the left for Francesco Valiani to fire in a strike on goal but Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastian Frey gathered with ease.
La Viola were unlucky not to go in front after nine minutes when Mario Santana headed Massimo Gobbi's cross onto the bar while Zdravko Kuzmanovic volleyed the rebound over. And it was Bologna's turn to rattle the frame of the goal after 20 minutes as Volpi's free-kick from the left wing rebounded off the far post.
Just after the half hour the visitors threatened again with Marazzina shooting just wide following good work by Marco Di Vaio and the lively Valiani.
The hosts took the lead after 37 minutes to the relief of the home crowd, Gilardino on hand at the far post to head home a pinpoint Santana cross from the right wing.
Kuzmanovic almost doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time as his low shot from outside the area whistled just wide with Francesco Antonioli beaten.
The Serbian midfielder came close again five minutes after the restart when he fired in a shot from the right channel but Antonioli gathered at the second attempt.
In the 52nd minute Gilardino was unlucky not to double his tally as his downward header from a Gobbi cross bounced up and over the bar.
The hosts were incensed after an hour when the referee waved play on after Santana appeared to be held back by Rossoblu defender Claudio Terzi when poised to shoot.
Volpi looked to test Frey with a shot from the edge of the area after 66 minutes but the French custodian got down well to block.
Jovetic forced a good save from Antonioli at the other end as his header was tipped over the bar for a corner, while with 10 minutes remaining substitute Giampaolo Pazzini curled an effort just wide for the hosts.
Bologna winger Martins Adailton had the last chance of the game in the final minute as he shot just wide following a Rossoblu short corner.
