FC Cincinnati might be new to Major League Soccer, but they are no stranger to success in the U.S. Open Cup, having reached the semifinals in 2017 before bowing out against the New York Red Bulls at home.
FC Cincy will open their first USOC run as an MLS team when they host Louisville City FC as a rivalry is renewed Wednesday at Nippert Stadium.
FC Cincinnati
FC Cincinnati will hope a change of competition can change their fortunes. The expansion side have lost four games in a row, and nine of their last 10 games following a 5-2 defeat against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium Thursday. They have been outscored 15-4 in their last four defeats.
FC Cincinnati are 7-2-2 all-time in the USOC, defeating Louisville City, 1-0, at Nippert Stadium in 2017 third round on a 49th-minute goal by Djiby. A year ago, FC Cincy were eliminated by Minnesota United, 3-1 on penalty kicks after a scoreless stalemate.
Louisville City FC
Louisville City, which reached the USOC quarterfinals a year ago, have yet to concede a goal in this year’s competition. They defeated Reading United AC of USL League Two, 3-0, in the second round as Abdoul Thiam and George Davis IV scored seven minutes apart early in the first half and Sunny Jane added an insurance goal two minutes from full time.
In the third round, John Hackworth’s squad defeated fellow USL Championship squad Birmingham Legion FC, 1-0, with Sean Totsch scoring a 90th-minute penalty kick.
