Expected Goals: Upcoming Milestones for Matchday 22

Cincinnati Sets Eyes on Home History

A marquee matchup on the Matchday 22 schedule, Supporters’ Shield-leading FC Cincinnati welcomes the New England Revolution to TQL Stadium on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass). With the top two teams in the league table set to square off, Cincinnati will look to defend their home territory with history on the line.

After winning just 11 home games in the first four years of its club history, FC Cincinnati needs one victory to become the first team in MLS annals to win 11 consecutive home matches in a single season. The 2002 San Jose Earthquakes are the only other team in MLS history to win 10 consecutive home matches in a single season. A victory would also tie for the second-longest home winning streak in MLS history, trailing only the 2001-02 Earthquakes that won 12 in a row from August 25, 2001 to July 24, 2002.

Shutout Streak at Stade Saputo

Winners of six consecutive home matches without allowing a goal over that span, CF Montréal enters Saturday night’s matchup against NYCFC (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass) with league history on the horizon.

With a shutout victory on Saturday, CF Montréal would become the first team in MLS history to record seven consecutive home victories without allowing a goal. The club is currently tied with the 2000 Kansas City Wizards and the 2019-20 Columbus Crew for the longest such streak in league annals. Leading the defensive charge for Montréal has been goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, who recorded 17 saves over the club’s last six matches at Stade Saputo.

Good as Gauld – Whitecaps Star on Scoring Streak

Coming off a MLS Player of the Matchday presented by Continental Tire performance, Vancouver’s Ryan Gauld continues to lead the club’s charge up the Western Conference standings. Gauld played a crucial role in the road victory over LAFC on Matchday 21, producing two assists and the game-winning goal in the contest.

Heading into the Whitecaps’ road matchup against Sporting Kansas City (8:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass), Gauld has scored in four straight games for the first time in his career. Only one player in club history – Camilo Sanvezzo from June 8 – July 3, 2013 – has found the back of the net in five consecutive matches. Gauld’s four-game scoring stretch is also currently the longest active streak in MLS.

Gil Helping Others Once Again

Three players with nine assists sit atop the MLS assist charts, including Carles Gil, who has been instrumental in New England totaling the second most points in the league (36). Gil’s consistency for the Revs has been unmatched and he is looking for his third consecutive season, and fourth in total, with at least 10 assists as they travel to face Supporters’ Shield leaders FC Cincinnati on Saturday evening (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass).

Only two active players have produced four or more seasons with at least 10 assists – Nicolás Lodeiro (five) and Gil’s foe on Matchday 22, Luciano Acosta (four). Additionally, Gil would become the first player in club history to reach four seasons with double-digit helpers, surpassing Lee Nguyen (2015-17) who did so in three seasons during his distinguished New England career.

Martínez and Zardes Meet Deadlocked in Goal Scoring Lore

Two of the top-10 all-time goal scorers in MLS history meet on Matchday 22 when Josef Martínez and Inter Miami CF host Gyasi Zardes and Austin FC at DRV PNK Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass). Martínez and Zardes both sit on 102 goals and are two shy of tying Dwayne De Rosario for the ninth –most scores in league history.

Interestingly, Martínez could make even more history on Saturday night. The dueling forwards have each scored against 26 different clubs in MLS history, tied with 2023 MLS All-Star Kei Kamara for the most in league annals. However, Martínez has never scored against Austin and can therefore become the first player to score against 27 different clubs in league history.
