Chelsea FC and England National Team midfielder Frank Lampard has added his name to a growing list of world stars showing interest in joining MLS. But, Lampard said, that would not happen until four or five years from now.
In an interview with a British web site, Sabotage Times, Lampard says he could see himself following the example of David Beckham and finishing his playing days in the US. The 31-year-old Lampard is under contract with his club for another three years.
"I'd like to go and play in America when I'm 36 or 35," said Lampard, who also told the online publication that he would be interested in starting a business in real estate once he retires.
The question, though, is whether MLS would make room for a 36-year-old Lampard.
Apart from Lampard, other soccer stars who are said to be coming to the States are Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro, Brazilian Zé Roberto and, most notably, French striker Thierry Henry.
A report from Philadelphia on Friday morning linked the Philadelphia Union with Cannavaro, who is fast approaching 37 years old but can still add some solidity and veteran experience to the expansion team.
Henry, soon to be 33 years old, has been rumored to be signing on with the New York Red Bulls along with Zé Roberto, who will be 36 in July.
Beckham, who plays for the LA Galaxy, turned 35 earlier this month.
