The Houston Dynamo Reserves pulled out a 1-0 win during a sluggish scrimmage against San Jacinto Junior College Thursday morning at Robertson Stadium. Midfielder Johnny Alcaraz scored the game's only goal with about five minutes remaining.
The game was notable for the debut of two players from the Dynamo Academy, 17-year-old Blake Shannon and 16-year-old Benji Saenz, as second-half substitutes. The San Jacinto squad also included three players on the Dynamo's Home-Grown Player List and several more with ties to the Dynamo Academy.
Although the heat sapped both teams of some energy, the Dynamo found the game-winning goal in the 86th minute. Forward Guy-Roland Kpene, a halftime sub, played a square ball to fellow halftime sub Johnny Alcaraz at the top of the box. Alcaraz played a one-two with Chris Wondolowski inside the area and fired a quick first-time shot into the lower right-hand corner.
Goalkeeper Corbin Waller needed just two saves to record the shutout. San Jacinto goalkeeper Gabriel Rodriguez made seven saves in the first half alone, and the Dynamo held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
The first-place Dynamo Reserves are 5-1-1 in MLS play this season and return to action on Wednesday, August 27, in a make-up game against FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.
