D.C. United forward Charlie Davies came back with a bang.
On a goal drought spanning well over two months, Davies registered a hat trick against Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night that not only accounted for a 3-0 win against the Goats but also earned Davies his first career Player of the Week award as voted by the North American Soccer Reporters.
Davies' first two goals came in a four-minute span early in the first half to give D.C. United a comfortable lead and he wrapped up his hat trick midway through the second half as United cruised to victory. All three strikes, which included two counterattack goals, were served up by teammate Chris Pontius, who later left the game after suffering a tibia fracture.
Saturday's three tallies lifted Davies to 11 goals on the season, good for third place in the league's Golden Boot race and only one off the pace set by New York's Thierry Henry and LA's Landon Donovan.
It's the fourth Player of the Week award for a D.C. United player — all coming in the last seven weeks — after Dwayne De Rosario (Week 20 and 21) and Pontius (Week 22).
