D.C. United added another left back to their ranks Friday, announcing that the club had signed La Liga veteran Cristian Fernández Salas. Per league and club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Fernández, 28, has been without a club since December after appearing in only four games for Almería this season. He had helped Almeria earn promotion to La Liga in 2012-13 by making 36 starts and playing every minute of the club's four promotion playoff games.
"We are pleased to be adding a left back with solid La Liga experience who is in the prime of his career,” said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper in a club statement. “Christian is very good at getting forward to join the attack and providing quality service. This move helps solidify our backline moving into the new season."
Fernández has spent most of his career to date with his hometown team, Racing Santander, only departing for Almería in 2012 after 10 seasons with Racing's "B" and senior teams. He also spent a spell in 2008 on loan with Las Palmas. In total, Fernández scored 33 goals across 243 appearances in Spain.
