D.C. United announced on Thursday that midfielder Chris Rolfe will miss six weeks of action following surgery to repair a fractured radial head and ulna in Rolfe's left forearm. Rolfe was injured in training on Wednesday.
Rolfe has produced six goals and six assists in 21 regular-season games for D.C. United since being acquired on April 2 in a trade with the Chicago Fire. The six assists are Rolfe's highest total since he recorded eight assists for Chicago in 2008.
Missing six weeks would put Rolfe in a position to return during the final two weeks of MLS action and for United's final CONCACAF Champions League game on Oct. 21.
D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen has several options to replace Rolfe on the left side of D.C.'s midfield, ranging from moving forward Fabián Espíndola out wide to replacing Rolfe with midfielders Lewis Neal, David Estrada or Alex Caskey. The impending return of Chris Pontius from April nerve surgery could also provide an ideal replacement.
