DC United 3, Chicago Fire 3 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

Francisco Calvo scored one of the stranger equalizers you will see two minutes into second-half stoppage time, and the Chicago Fire salvaged a 3-3 draw with D.C. United on Wednesday night at Audi Field after giving back an early two-goal lead.

CJ Sapong and Djordje Mihailovic also scored early for the Fire, who moved a point above Toronto FC into seventh place and above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.

Calvo's Costa Rican compatriot Ulises Segura scored his first career MLS brace to pull D.C. level, and Luciano Acosta put the hosts ahead briefly in the 81st minute on a second goal set up by a tantalizing delivery from right back Leonardo Jara.

But after a late effort was blocked by a D.C. defender, Bastian Schweinsteiger reached the deflection and sent a hopeful, looping first-time ball toward the penalty spot. Calvo beat goalkeeper Bill Hamid to it and headed it home before Hamid clattered into him.

Three Things

THE BIG PICTURE: Both D.C. coach Ben Olsen and his Chicago counterpart Veljko Paunovic will have plenty of teachable moments from the game tape of a sloppy affair in which ultimately a draw was probably the fair outcome. However, they might both feel better after watching this one than Costa Rica boss Gustavo Matosas, did not put Segura on his provisional 40-man roster for the upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH: 
Sometimes there are occasions that remind you that, as serious as it feels, this is just a game in the end. One of those came in the 68th minute, when
Chris Odoi-Atsem
 exited to an emotional ovation after playing his first match since battling Hodgkins Lymphoma into remission.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Ulises Segura. The midfielder was in his fourth consecutive start and his secodn in place of suspended winger Paul Arriola, who should return from his ban on Saturday. While Segura doesn't quite play with Arriola's hair-on-fire presence, he provided some needed energy when the rest of D.C.'s front four looked a step off. In addition to his brace, he should've had an assist before halftime, but Wayne Rooney headed his sumptuous cross over the bar.
