COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis announced today that The Crew has hired Eduardo "Eddie" Carvacho as its new goalkeeper coach.
"I would like to thank Coach Andrulis and the Columbus Crew for this great honor and opportunity to contribute to the success of this unbelievable organization," said Carvacho. "I am excited, blessed and humbled. I can identify myself with this club, both from my days at preseason camp as a player, and with its motto: America's Hardest Working Team. All I can promise is effort, hard work, dedication and perseverance toward winning an MLS Championship for all of our fans."
Carvacho, a USSF "A" licensed coach, brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the Crew coaching staff. The bilingual Carvacho was most recently the Director of Coaching & Operations for the Golden Isles Soccer Association and Jekyll Island Soccer Complex (since June 2003) in St. Simons Island, Ga. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Clemson (2001-2003). He also has his NSCAA Premier Diploma and is on the USSF National Instructor Goalkeeper staff.
As a player, Carvacho was an All-American at South Alabama in 1989 and had professional stints with the Colorado Foxes (APSL), Nashville Metros (USISL) and the Atlanta Ruckus (A-League). He was also a U.S. National Team pool goalkeeper under former National Team coaches Bob Gansler and Bora Milutinovic. Carvacho grew up in Chile and was a part of the Santiago Wanderers youth system, as well as a pool player for the Chilean U-20 National Team.
"Eddie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff," said Andrulis. "His vast experience at all levels of soccer will greatly benefit our coaching staff."
Carvacho also has some ties to The Crew, having been called-up on loan to the team in 1997 while with Atlanta. He has also been teammates with Jon Busch (USISL Nashville Metros in 1996) and Robin Fraser (APSL Colorado Foxes in 1991).
Carvacho and his wife, Nicole, have two children, Nicolas and Gracelyn.
