It's been about eight months since the last Concacaf Champions League matches were played, but the wait for the 2020 competition to resume is almost over. Concacaf announced Monday that this year's Champions League will resume to completion from December 15-22.
The competition will resume where it left off in the quarterfinals, which will be completed over two legs. The semifinal and final will be played as single-elimination games with the matchups held at a centralized location in the United States. More information will be announced in the coming weeks.
NYCFC, Montreal Impact, LAFC and Atlanta United are four MLS teams still alive in the tournament. NYCFC, Atlanta and Montreal are all currently trailing in their matchups. Only LAFC did not play the first leg of their quarterfinal matchups, so they will play a single-elimination match to determine who advances to the semifinals. If the match is tied, it will go straight to penalty kicks.
Atlanta are down 3-0 to Club America, Montreal trailing 2-1 to Olimpia and NYCFC are losing 1-0 to Tigres UANL. The first leg between LAFC and Cruz Azul was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The quarterfinals will be played on December 15-16, the semifinals on December 19 and the final on December 22.
MLS Cup is scheduled to be played on December 12.
The 2020 CCL began back in February of this year. The Seattle Sounders were the lone MLS entrant not to advance to the quarterfinals, losing to Olimpia after penalties in the round of 16. LAFC memorably advanced to the quarterfinals only after overcoming a 2-0 deficit against Club Leon, who at the point were atop Liga MX.
An MLS team has never won the CCL. Toronto FC came the closest in 2018, falling in penalties to Chivas, then managed by current San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda.
