In an aggregate scoring system, the result is determined by the combined score of both legs of the series. Ex:

Away-Goals Rule
The away-goals rule means that if the aggregate score is tied at the end of regulation time of the 2nd leg, the first tiebreaker will be total goals scored away from home. Ex:

WHO QUALIFIES?
The top five teams in each conference (see: final 2014 MLS standings).
STRUCTURE:
Knockout Round: The #4 and #5 seeds in each conference will play in the Knockout Round, which consists of one match hosted by the #4 seed, respectively.
Conference Semifinals: The four Conference Semifinals will be decided by two-game aggregate series (see right), with the lower seed hosting the first leg and the higher seed hosting the second leg.
If the aggregate score is tied at the end of regulation time of the second leg, the away-goals rule (see right) will be applied as the first tiebreaker. If the away goals are also level, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety, followed by penalty kicks, if necessary. The winners will advance to the Conference Championships.
