What should be made of the Colorado Rapids' early personnel moves under new coach Anthony Hudson? Well, among other things, they signal a shift to a 3-5-2 formation, writes John Meyer of the Denver Post.
The signings of Jack Price and Edgar Castillo are the beginnings of that shift under Hudson and interim GM Padraig Smith, Meyer writes. And the addition of one or two more strikers and one or two more center backs would complete the personnel revamp needed to make the change to Hudson's preferred shape.
The Rapids played mostly a 4-5-1 last season, or a 4-2-3-1, depending on who you ask.
“I just think it’s a system where you can have a good amount of numbers both in attack and defense, and you’ve always got a good structure with and without the ball,” Hudson told the Denver Post. “And the biggest thing is, I love playing with two strikers.”
With Castillo's acquisition, Meyer notes the Rapids likely have their starting wingbacks in place, with Castillo on the left and Marlon Hairston on the right. It's just a start though.
“We’re certainly not done,” Smith told the Post. “There’s still a lot more to come.”
