UEFA unveiled plans on resuming the 2019-20 Champions League and Europa League competitions, the governing body announced Wednesday following the UEFA Executive Committee meeting.
So when can you expect to see former Vancouver Whitecaps star and Canadian phenom Alphonso Davies as well as the US men’s national team quartet of Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Timothy Chandler and John Brooks?
After the remaining second leg of Champions League Round of 16 matchups are completed August 7-8 at venues to be determined, the rest of the competition will be played in Lisbon, Portugal as a straight knockout tournament.
The quarterfinals are scheduled from August 12-15, the semifinals to be played August 18-19 and the final is slated for August 23.
The games will be split between Benfica's Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica (which will host the final) and Sporting CP's Estadio Jose Alvalade.
The Champions League halted March 11 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. RB Leipzig, featuring former New York Red Bulls standout Adams, along with Paris Saint-Germain, Atalanta and Atletico Madrid have already booked their quarterfinal bids.
Featuring Davies, Bayern Munich have a 3-0 lead over Pulisic’s Chelsea following the first leg of a Round of 16 tie.
The Europa League quarterfinals, semifinals and final will also be a straight knockout competition, with all matches played in German cities Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen from August 10-21.
Unlike the Champions League, none of the Europa League Round of 16 ties have been decided. And two matchups — Inter Milan vs. Getafe and Sevilla vs. Roma — have yet to be played. Those two will also be a single knockout game.
Brooks’ Wolfsburg trails Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 after the first leg and Chandler’s Eintracht Frankfurt trails Basel, 3-0, following the first leg.
