Is Major League Soccer's all-time scoring champion ready to call it a career?
That appears to at least be a possibility, as Chris Wondolowski admitted that he's mulling retirement on Sunday, after his San Jose Earthquakes saw their 2019 season draw to a close with a Decision Day presented by AT&T loss at Portland. The Quakes icon posted a tweet later in the evening that hinted at a new chapter in his career:
Wondo scored his 15th goal of the year in the 3-1 defeat, running his MLS-best career total to a whopping 159 goals in 359 career regular-season appearances.
Earlier in the season he broke Landon Donovan's all-time record, a long-pursued milestone he subsequently admitted was a relief to conquer, and in remarks to the media after Sunday's game, he revealed that coach Matias Almeyda's overhaul of the Quakes renewed his love for the sport after the frustrations of San Jose's woeful 2018.
One of the Quakes' Designated Players, Wondo is reportedly in the final option year of his contract, which would suggest that he and the club will need to agree terms on a new deal should he elect to continue his illustrious career.
