On the third day of activities at the Copa Internacional Chivas Bimbo 2010, known as the 'Copa Chivas', Chivas USA took on Estudiantes Tecos of Guadalajara in Group A action. Both teams played strong soccer in what was a battle of the midfield, but Estudiantes was able to take the win, scoring the match's only goal.
The first half of Sunday's match was hotly contested, with both teams trying to impose their style on the match and prevent any opportunities from the opponents. Estudiantes Tecos, supported by their hometown fans, were able to get a few chances through their forwards, though none were able to break through. Chivas USA played more directly to forwards Ruben Gonzalez and Bryan de la Fuente, who were unable to find a way past Rafael Martinez in the Tecos net.
In the second half, Estudiantes Tecos came out stronger, and in the 49th minute Iventue Aguilar got past the Chivas USA defense on the right side, and his cross from near the corner found Ricardo Gracia, whose shot gave Tecos the 1-0 leda.
Chivas USA responded with shots from distance that went wide of the Tecos net, and in the 57th minute midfielder Ian Hines intercepted a clearance from Tecos, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper in what was the final real chance for the Red-and-White, who suffered their second loss of the tournament.
With the win, Estudiantes Tecos has four points in Group A, while Chivas USA has three after beating FC Tokyo on Saturday. In the fourth round, Tecos will play Tokyo, while Chivas USA faces Universidad Católica from Chile on Tuesday.
"We have to beat Católica and Santos (Chivas USA's opponent on Wednesday), two strong teams. The feeling from this match is a little bad, because it was the best match we've played yet, we had good attacks, and I think a draw would have been more fair for what we di don the field," said Chivas USA U-18 Head Coach Sacha van der Most.
