CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA today announced the signing of goalkeeper Justin Myers as a Developmental Player. Myers, a 22-year-old graduate of the University of California and a native of San Diego, California, becomes the third netminder on Chivas USA's 28-man roster, alongside Preston Burpo and Brad Guzan.
Myers played his college soccer at the University of California, where in 2006 he started 15 matches for the Golden Bears, compiling an 11-4-0 record (W-L-T), registering six shutouts and a 0.87 goals-against average. In 2005, he played one game for Cal, as a second-half sub, after not playing in 2004. Myers redshirted his freshman year in Berkeley (2003).
Born January 15, 1985, in Phoenix, Arizona, Myers grew up in San Diego, California, where he was a three-year varsity soccer captain at Torrey Pines High School, while also lettering in football. Myers was also named MVP for his club side, the San Diego Surf Soccer Club, with which he won the 2001 Surf Cup title. Myers graduated from the University of California in May 2007 with a major in Legal Studies. He is also a licensed real estate agent.
Myers had been originally signed by Chivas USA to a temporary contract, on June 29, due to a case of 'extreme hardship' (as stipulated by MLS's Player Rules and Regulations when a club has less than two available goalkeepers). He served as a back-up to Chivas USA netminder Preston Burpo during last Saturday's 2-0 win over the New England Revolution, during the absence of Brad Guzan, who is currently on international duty with the U.S. National Team at the Copa América in Venezuela.
