Chivas USA to remember 'Tubo' Gomez

Before this Sunday's game against the New England Revolution, Chivas USA will observe a moment of silence for legendary Chivas de Guadalajara goalkeeper Jaime 'Tubo' Gómez, one of Mexico's greatest goalkeepers and a founding father of Chivas de Guadalajara's 'Campeonísimo' era. Gómez, who won six Mexican league titles for Chivas USA's parent club during a nine-year period from 1956-1965, passed away on Sunday, May 4, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 78.

Before kickoff of Chivas USA's game Sunday vs. New England, which will be broadcast live nationally on TeleFutura, all 22 players from Chivas USA and the Revolution will stand at midfield of The Home Depot Center and observe a moment of silence in memory of Gómez. Chivas USA's players will also wear black armbands in honor of Gómez during the match.

Considered the greatest goalkeeper ever to play for Chivas de Guadalajara, Jaime 'Tubo' Gómez won an unprecedented seven league titles for Chivas during a nine-year period (1956-1965), establishing himself as a key figure of the club's 'Campeonísimo' era that paved the way for Guadalajara's current success as Mexico's unrivaled eleven-time league champion. At the international level, Gómez was a member of the Mexican National Team at the FIFA World Cup in Sweden (1958) and Chile (1962).

A virtual encyclopedia of Chivas history, Gómez authored the definitive work, 'Chivas: La historia official del Guadalajara' (Chivas: The official history of Club Deportivo Guadalajara), which to this day forms the basis for much of the club's official archives, including the Chivas de Guadalajara sections of Chivas USA's media guide, to which Gómez contributed. Known for his wry sense of humor, perhaps the most enduring image of Gómez's playing career is from a Guadalajara derby match against Atlas in 1965, when, unchallenged his opposing strikers, he pulled out a magazine and sat down at the foot of his own goalpost for a read while the game was taking place.

Chivas USA hosts the New England Revolution, this Sunday, May 11 at 12 noon PT in a match that will be broadcast live nationally on TeleFutura (Spanish). In honor of Mothers Day, admission is free for all Moms, who will receive a complimentary flower at the gate.
