CARSON, Calif. - Club Deportivo Chivas USA today acquired Costa Rican international Douglas Sequeira from fellow Major League Soccer expansion team Real Salt Lake in exchange for Chivas USA's natural second-round pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. The 27-year-old Sequeira occupies Chivas USA's fourth Senior International slot.
Sequeira joins Chivas USA after two seasons with Costa Rican club Deportivo
Saprissa (2000-2004). The tall central defender, who can also play defensive
midfielder, impressed the Chivas USA coaching staff while on trial during
the team's two-week training camp in Guadalajara in early February. Upon
returning to Costa Rica, Sequeira bid farewell in style, scoring the winning
goal in Saprissa's 1-0 victory in the "clásico" of Costa Rican football
against archrival Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
In addition to Saprissa, Sequeira has played for top-flight European sides
Feyenoord of the Netherlands (1997-1999) and Karlsruhe of Germany
(1999-2000). Sequeira has played at all major levels for the Costa Rican
national team, representing his country at the U-17 (1995) and U-20 (1997)
world championships and during the qualifying process for the 2000 Sydney
Olympics. Sequeira made his debut with the full Costa Rican national team in
2004, the year in which he won the league title with Saprissa.
