Chicago Fire FC debuted at the MLS is Back Tournament against the Seattle Sounders and they revealed a special Black Lives Matter tribute during the match.
Captain Francisco Calvo walked on to the field with a special armband, one created by Chicago-based artist Dwight White, prominently featuring a black fist, the words Black Lives Matter and much more that aims to capture a range of thoughts and emotions in the fight against racial injustice.
“I put a lot of my own thoughts on paper as if I was taking notes,” White told the Fire's club website of the concept. “I’ve had so many conversations over the last couple months with my peers — whether they’re African American, Latino, across all races — and I’ve been able to hear peoples’ experiences with what’s currently happening in the world — peoples’ curiosity, peoples’ togetherness.
"There’s also a huge divide. That was really my entire purpose when I first got the concept, was how can I capture a lot of those thoughts and those emotions that I’ve heard across a variety of people and bring it all together into one circular — or oval — design.”
