Week 19 was a busy one for the Professional Referee Organization with six reviews, including three in one game, while the New York Red Bulls’ controversial second goal against New York City FC in the New York Derby Sunday was the talk of the week.
PRO’s Greg Barkey takes us behind the curtain and inside the Video Review room at Rio Tinto Stadium where critical decisions were made on a potential red card to Real Salt Lake midfielder Damir Kreilach for a challenge on Philadelphia Union forward Kacper Przybylko, a potential penalty kick infraction inside the box and a Union goal being called back when the ball cleared the end line.
Barkey also explained why Video Review wasn’t utilized in the corner kick vs. throw-in moment leading up to Danny Royer’s winning goal against NYCFC.
On the season, there have been 93 total reviews in 242 matches this season, with 23 penalty kicks, 11 red cards and seven goals awarded following Video Review.
