A team with a long-standing history, Celtic FC won the Scottish League for the 2005-06 season while amassing 91 points. Since the club's founding in 1888, Celtic has been a stronghold in the Scottish League as this win marks the 40th time that the club has been champion of the League. The current squad boasts high-profile players such as Scottish defender Stephen McManus, Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura and Polish forward Maciej Zurawski.

Defender Bobby Boswell put the Black-and-Red up 1-0 before United eventually fell by a 2-1 score in front of more than 31,000 fans. D.C. United has been impressive in international friendlies and holds a 14-5-3 all-time record in such games.
