There's a reason that scoring is down nearly half-a-goal per game this season: The guys in net are playing really, really good soccer.
Once again, a large number of goalkeepers threw shutouts at the weekend, and for the third straight week a netminder found himself at the top top of the Castrol Index Weekly Top 20. This time, the honor went to New England Revolution's Bobby Shuttleworth, who kept his team in it from beginning to end in a scoreless draw at Seattle on Saturday.
Shuttleworth was one of five 'keepers to crack the top six, with the last two winners – FC Dallas' Raúl Fernández and Portland Timbers' Donovan Ricketts – coming in at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. New York's Luis Robles, who backstopped a 2-0 win for the Red Bulls at RFK, finished fifth, while Real Salt Lake veteran Nick Rimando placed sixth for his team's 1-1 draw at Vancouver.
Only Philadelphia Union striker Jack McInerney, who picked up his fourth goal of the year in a 1-1 draw vs. Toronto FC, broke the 'keeper hegemony, finishing fourth.
In all, nine 'keepers found a home in the Top 20 this past week. LA's Carlo Cudicini finished eighth for his efforts in a 1-0 loss at Dallas, while Chivas USA's Dan Kennedy was ninth despite a 1-0 home loss to Colorado. TFC's Joe Bendik finished 13th for his spectacular effort at Philly, while the Rapids' Clint Irwin pulled in at No. 16 notching his second straight win and first career shutout.
MLS Player of the Week Brad Davis, who had a goal and an assist as the Houston Dynamo topped Chicago to extend their home unbeaten streak to 35 games, finished 14th.
