Bornstein named Player of the Week

Chivas USA forward Jonathan Bornstein has been named MLS Player of the Week for Week 17. Bornstein notched two goals in a break-out performance on Thursday, July 20 helping Chivas USA earn a 3-3 draw with the Colorado Rapids.

In his rookie season, Bornstein is establishing himself as an offensive threat. He led the team with five shots and two goals on Thursday night and looked dangerous throughout the match. His first goal of the game came in the 74th minute when he beat two Rapids defenders at the top of the box and calmly shot the ball past Joe Cannon into the right corner of the net. Bornstein continued his scoring run when hit an amazing strike from 20 yards out as stoppage time had begun. The scoring play began with a long ball that Bornstein ran onto after fighting off a Rapids defender. After racing by the defender, he ripped a left-footed half volley that stunned the Rapids goalkeeper.

Bornstein has started all 19 matches this season and has tallied three goals for Chivas USA. After playing his first three collegiate years at Cal Poly Pomona, Bornstein transferred to UCLA for his senior year. This is Bornstein's first Player of the Week awards and the second for Chivas USA following Ante Razov in Week 11.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
