Birdman cometh: Columbus Crew's Dominic Oduro earns September Player of the Month nod

Dominic Oduro, Columbus Crew

The Gold-and-Black are red-hot, and it has a lot to do with Dominic Oduro

After pacing the Columbus Crew to a 4-1 record in September with three goals – all of them game-winners – and two assists, the Ghanaian striker was named MLS Player of the Month on Thursday.

Oduro's efforts sparked the Crew's best September since 2004, and have helped haul Columbus back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. Thursday's news marks his second award in four days, as he also netted Player of the Week honors on Monday.

He outpolled Portland Timbers playmaker Diego Valeri, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles and San Jose netminder Jon Busch and Portland defender Pa Modou Kah in the Player of the Month race. (See how the North American Soccer Reporters voted here.)

Oduro and the Crew resume their playoff push against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
