Could a German legend be coming to MLS?
Bastian Schweinsteiger, currently struggling to find playing time at Manchester United, raised some eyebrows last week when he announced that the Red Devils would be his “last club in Europe.” And on Friday, the Schweinsteiger-to-America train picked up steam when Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported that the Chicago Fire are interested in the 32-year-old midfielder.
But this week, Schweinsteiger splashed a little bit of cold water on the rumors, saying in a news conference that his dream is still to play for Manchester United and that he has “no personal problems” with head coach Jose Mourinho, who has relegated him to a reserve role.
The longtime Bayern Munich and German national team star didn’t rule out a future move to MLS, calling it "naturally an option." But he acknowledged that “it won’t happen this season” because the league’s transfer window is closed.
If Schweinsteiger fails to break through at Manchester United and decides to continue his legendary career in MLS, it would likely happen in January. The would Fire have a leg up on other interested MLS sides, should they emerge, since they hold a discovery claim on Schweinsteiger and could be in the market for a big-name acquisition heading into the 2017 season.
