Atlanta United got the go-ahead to proceed with an expansion of their training facility, The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, as the Marietta, Georgia City Council approved the sale of 17 adjacent acres to the club for a reported $9.6 million.
The complex is home to the daily activities of the Five Stripes’ first team as well as their youth academy. The club has not yet disclosed what will be built on the new acreage.
Already one of the most lavish, cutting-edge facilities of its kind in MLS, ATLUTD’s home base in Marietta is a 33-acre complex with a 30,000-square-foot building packed with state-of-the-art features and six fields – three natural grass, three FieldTurf, one of which is a mini-stadium that hosted the MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer® during All-Star Week last year.
“The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta has been a critical factor in Atlanta United’s success, both in the first team’s championship rise and the development of Atlanta United 2 and our academy programs,” said an Atlanta United spokesperson in a statement provided to MLSsoccer.com.
“We will continue to invest in the bright future of Atlanta United at every level and look forward to continuing the club’s development in Marietta with this acquisition adjacent to our current facility. Specific plans for this parcel have not been finalized, but our intent is to enhance current soccer-related activities on the property.”
