The Seattle Sounders have reached three of the last four MLS Cups, winning two, and since joining MLS in 2009 have seven major trophies to their name overall. So does that make them a dynasty?
ESPN's Taylor Twellman broached the question with Seattle's Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris during a ESPN FC "Banter" segment released earlier this week. Roldan said there's still work for the club to do to reach that status — for example, to win multiple pieces of hardware in the same season.
"It’s great to be mentioned in the dynasty world," Roldan said. "However, we still need to win more Supporters’ Shields. We still need to get on that. We’ve won MLS Cups recently, but when was the last time we won a Supporters’ Shield? So I think that’s where we need to get to — to win multiple trophies in one year."
Hardcore fans would of course point out the Sounders in fact accomplished that feat once, winning the 2014 U.S. Open Cup and Supporters' Shield. But those were the days when the club was still haunted by continued playoff disappointment. Perhaps more to the point, that achievement also came before either Roldan or Morris had turned pro.
Morris also believes there is more work left to do. But for him it's about winning more MLS Cups to join the likes of the LA Galaxy, who have won five, or D.C. United, who won four in their early years.
"I think it’s obviously an honor to be a part of a team that’s considered to be in that group," Morris said. "I mean you see in the last few years we’ve had some great success. I think to really get to that point, I think we just need to keep going. We want to match other teams with more MLS Cups. And I think in the last couple years, we’ve done really, really well. But I think the whole goal as an organization is to keep going and to keep pushing and to keep winning more and more MLS Cups."
