AMSTERDAM – Rookie FC Utrecht attacker Rubio Rubin will spend some time on the shelf after suffering a broken nose and concussion during Sunday's preseason friendly with Dundee United.
Mere moments after coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute, the 18-year-old was involved in a heavy collision. The broken nose was re-set at the hospital, but he must wait until the concussion symptoms subside before returning to action.
"He has to recover, so he won't play for a while," FC Utrecht press officer Martin Versteeg told MLSsoccer.com on Thursday. "He will return to training next week, but without contact."
Rubin, who signed with the Eredivisie side in March, was initially with the reserve team as preseason camp began. However, he has been spending much of his time with the senior group, having impressed manager Jan Wouters.
When he makes his first-team debut, the US Under-20 national team ace will become the third American to play for Utrecht, following John O'Brien and Juan Agudelo. The Galgenwaard crew will kick off the new Eredivisie season at FC Zwolle on August 8.
