GUADALAJARA, Mexico – A trio of Texans featured in Mexico's Copa MX on Tuesday night.
Forward Sonny Guadarrama's excellent start to the season continued, despite Mérida losing 1-0 at home to Club Tijuana.
Guadarrama (above) went the full 90 minutes for losVenados and was at the heart of most of his team's attacking moves, going close to scoring in the 55th minute after driving into the penalty and seeing his deflected cross tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Adrián Zermeño.
The Austin native joined Mérida on loan from Atlante in the offseason. He was voted man of the match in his first game last week, scored the winning goal in the league last weekend and again impressed against Tijuana.
Alongside him, Calexico, Calif.-born Isaac Acuña came on for the last 30 minutes.
For the Xolos, Dallas-area native Greg Garza was solid at left back, shutting out danger down that side of the pitch. He also went 90 minutes for the second successive game in the tournament.
Austin native Marco Vidal (above) started for Lobos BUAP in the heart of the midfield against Toluca. The team from Puebla drew 2-2, with Vidal completing the game and making a vital defensive interception two minutes from the end.
