AMSTERDAM – Promoted Irish side Galway United will have their top scorer back after inking Jake Keegan to a new one-year deal.
The 23-year-old New York native (pictured above, left) bagged 14 goals to finish third on the second-flight scoring chart and help the Tribesman finish third on the table. Keegan hit for seven goals in the last five games as Galway went unbeaten down the stretch to reach the promotion tie, where he then scored the capper in a 4-1 aggregate victory over Shelbourne.
"It was set up before he left in November," a club spokesman told MLSsoccer.com of the new contract, which is the standard length in Ireland's league. "We had to wait until the work permit came through."
Drafted by the Philadelphia Union in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, Keegan got his professional start with German mites Darmstadt before arriving in Ireland at the start of last season. Galway will kick off their first League of Ireland Premier Division slate since 2011 when Derry City visits on March 6.
