American Exports: Grella loaned to Motherwell

Mike Grella helped Leeds United to a Championship promotion, but needs to find the net to get playing time.

AMSTERDAM – Leeds United strike prospect Mike Grella has been loaned to Scottish Premier League middlers Motherwell until the end of the season.

It is the third loan assignment of the term for the 23-year-old New York native, who had consecutive short-term stays at Carlisle United. The American scored three times in 10 League One appearances for the Blues.

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall is hoping Grella can spark the team's attack, which has not scored in 403 league minutes of play.

"I've spoke to a couple of players and coaches down there [in England] and they speak highly of him," McCall told reporters on Thursday. "Leeds are only letting him go because they have three or four strikers on good form. The kid’s hungry to succeed and we are happy to give him a platform.

"We are happy to be keeping clean sheets, but we need to start finding the net in the SPL. Hopefully, Mike can help us do that."

Early indications from the gaffer indicate that Grella could see action when the Steelmen host Hibernian on Saturday.

Motherwell currently stand sixth in the SPL, but an eight-match winless slide has them closer to bottom than to a Europa League slot.
