AMSTERDAM – The woes continued on Wednesday for Brad Guzan and Aston Villa, who were bounced from the Capital One Cup by a 2-1 fourth-round defeat at Southampton.
The US netminder recorded one save and a cross capture to help keep the game scoreless until Japan wingback Maya Yoshida surged forward to pick the low corner with a 20-yard drive.
Guzan was then beaten by a close-range Graziano Pelle volley before Scott Sinclair pulled one back late for Villa.
Over in Germany, Caleb Stanko watched on from the home dugout as Freiburg stumbled at the DfB-Pokal second round hurdle with a 3-0 home loss to derby rivals Augsburg.
