AMSTERDAM – Birmingham City handyman Jonathan Spector is set to run out of contract in June, but MLSsoccer.com has learned chances are good the US international will be back at St. Andrews next season.
The 27-year-old, who will miss the Brums' season closer against visiting Blackburn on Saturday due to an ankle injury, can be retained for another year on a pre-agreed deal. Spector's agent expects a decision from the club next week.
"They hold a club option and have indicated they will take it," Spector rep Stephen Kelly told MLSsoccer.com. "The only thing that could stop them is they have a desperate financial situation."
Spector was recently the subject of a Cardiff City rumor in UK outlet The Star, but his agent says there's no truth to the rumor.
"I don't know where they got that from," Kelly said. "Cardiff wanted him before he signed with Birmingham [in 2011], so maybe they got the idea from that."
Spector played 29 Championship games for Birmingham this season, with most of his time split between right back and central midfield. With a win this weekend, the Brums can finish as high as ninth place.
