KANSAS CITY, Kan. – His professional career is still in its nascent stages, but Alessandro Florenzi gave fans a glimpse of what he's capable of on Wednesday at Sporting Park.
After logging an assist on AS Roma's first goal and scoring the second in a 3-1 victory against their MLS counterparts, Florenzi was voted Most Valuable Player of the 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.
Playing wide right in Roma's five-man midfield, the 22-year-old tucked inside on Kevin Strootman's fourth-minute opener and flicked a pass from Miralem Pjanic in behind the All-Star backline. Florenzi's goal came two minutes after halftime when he deposited a Federico Balzaretti low cross into the corner of the net.
For the third time in four years, the All-Star MVP comes from the visiting side, as D.C. United's Chris Pontius won last year and Manchester United pair Ji-Sung Park and Federico Macheda won in 2011 and 2010.
