Adebayo Akinfenwa: muscle-bound legend, English soccer (sorry, football) cult hero, and … Seattle Sounders fan?
Devoted followers of the English game among the lower divisions revere Akinfenwa, nicknamed “the Beast,” for his unusual-for-soccer sturdy build and his flair for sound bites. (A lot of people also know him, naturally, for his appearance in EA SPORTS FIFA, in which he's been dubbed the strongest footballer in the world.)
Just check this post-game quote, which came this past May. He had just scored a penalty for his League Two side, AFC Wimbledon, in a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle for the league’s playoff final.
So that was a great time to mention he had been released from the club, right?
So, can we take this recent snap of him in a Sounders FC hat as an overture towards MLS, or just very good sports apparel taste?
Whatever it is, the team has invited him to, as he requested, chat by WhatsApp—at least on Twitter.
Okay, before we all fan the flames of the rumor mill, it’s basically just social media fun for now—but if you’ve been gunning for Akinfenwa to head to Cascadia, maybe it’s a glimmer of hope?
