2022 Schedule
Armchair Analyst's Breakdown
- Strength: There was teamwide buy-in and chemistry last year, and with it came a tangible amount of progress on both an individual and collective level.
- Weakness: Do they have enough top-end talent to take another step and become a playoff team?
Key Departures
- Kiki Struna: Center back Kiki Struna left Montréal after one season in Canada, having joined via trade from Houston Dynamo FC. Struna made 18 appearances in 2021 with Montréal, part of his 64 career MLS appearances.
Key Acquisitions
- Alistair Johnston: Alistair Johnston was a rock for Nashville SC’s record-setting defense during their expansion season, then continued as a constant last year whenever he wasn’t with the Canadian national team. Acquired via a trade for $1 million in General Allocation Money, he should slot in very nicely as a right-sided center back in Wilfried Nancy’s back three.
- Kei Kamara: It remains to be seen how big a role he'll play, though MLS great Kei Kamara has joined CFM after being a free agent. The 37-year-old forward is the fifth all-time leading scorer in league history with 130 goals. He joins his ninth MLS team after successful stretches with the Columbus Crew, Sporting Kansas City and more after featuring for Sierra Leone in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.
- Montréal also solidified the future for several of 2021's key contributors. They turned loans of Ahmed Hamdi, Joaquín Torres and Lassi Lappalainen into permanent deals, while goalkeeper Sebastian Breza returned on loan and defender Rudy Camacho re-signed.
