Montreal Impact star Ignacio Piatti named Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

Ignacio Piatti - Montreal Impact - POTW

Ignacio Piatti is the heartbeat of the Montreal Impact, one of the most productive attackers in MLS this season, an early contender for league MVP – and now he’s Alcatel MLS Player of the Week for Week 10.

The Argentinean playmaker was the chief architect of the Impact’s wild 4-2 win over the New England Revolution, scoring a goal and setting up his team’s other three, a display that’s earned him POTW honors as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

Carving open the Revolution backline with a variety of incisive passes, Piatti fed Anthony Jackson-Hamel for the game’s first two goals, then served up an inviting delivery that Raheem Edwards slotted home to run the score to 3-0. Then he raced on to a long ball from Samuel Piette before netting a tidy finish of his own in the 68th minute.

Piatti now ranks fifth in the MLS Golden Boot race with five goals in eight games, and he and the New York Red BullsKaku share the top spot on the league's assists chart with six (three of Piatti’s are game-winning assists). He also earned a spot in the Week 10 Team of the Week presented by Audi.

How pivotal is Piatti for the Impact? He has had a hand in 78.6 percent of Montreal’s scoring in 2018, either creating or finishing 11 of their 14 goals. No other player in MLS has played a role in more than 60 percent of his team’s goals.

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men's soccer in the United States and Canada.
