Jozy Altidore won’t be suiting up for the US national team at the Copa America Centenario due to a hamstring injury, but the Toronto FC striker will still have an impact on the tournament.
According to SI.com, Altidore and his foundation donated funds and teamed with the St. Luke Foundation to make sure that every Haiti and USMNT match at the tournament, the semifinals and final will be broadcast in the island nation. As part of the initiative, the St. Luke Foundation will arrange, host and supervise public watch parties for the games, which will feature large projection screens that will be transported to Haiti from Miami.
Altidore, whose parents are from Haiti, told SI.com that the initiative would’ve taken place regardless of whether or not he was healthy.
Haiti is in Group B at the Copa America, and will kick off their tournament against Peru on June 4. They’ll then face Brazil on June 8 before wrapping up group play against Ecuador on June 12.
Sporting Kansas City midfielder Soni Mustivar is the lone MLS player on Haiti’s Copa America roster.
