Chris Pontius and C.J. Sapong struck for a pair of first-half goals to lift the Philadelphia Union to a 2-0 win over New York City FC Saturday afternoon at Talen Energy Stadium.
The Union (4-3-0) has won all three games at home this year, while NYCFC (1-3-3) hasn’t won since its opener on March 6.
One minute after David Villa hammered a shot off the crossbar for NYCFC, Pontius gave the Union the lead on 26 minutes. Tranquillo Barnetta took a touch over a sliding Jason Hernandez and cut the ball back to Pontius, who tapped it in from the edge of the six.
Sapong doubled the Union’s lead four minutes from halftime, first flicking on a long ball over the top to Sebastien Le Toux before deflecting a Le Toux's attempt into the net.
