The Chicago Fire continue to finalize their roster for the 2016 season, announcing Friday the signing of Alex Morrell, the club’s second-round pick from this year’s SuperDraft.
The 21-year-old midfielder is locked up for the 2016 season with club options in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He will be available off the bench for the Fire's Friday night game at Orlando City (7 pm ET; UniMás, UDN - US, MLS LIVE - CAN).
"Alex has some very good offensive qualities that we believe can be refined and would make him a special player," Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodríguez said in a statement released by the club.
Morrell was selected 22nd overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft from the University of North Florida, becoming the first player in school history to be drafted. A 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Tournament Team and First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honoree, Morrell scored 10 goals and tallied 19 assists in 63 games across four seasons.
A native of Lakeland, Fla., Morrell led George Jenkins High School to the 2012 District Championship in his senior year and a 91-4-8 record in four years.
