Dustin McCarty

Acquired by Los Angeles: Selected by the Galaxy in the second round (34th overall) of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft.

A versatile central midfielder who helped lead North Carolina to the College Cup semifinals three times, Dustin McCarty is in his first season with the Galaxy after being selected by the club in the second round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft. McCarty began his college career at the University of Central Florida, earning Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2007 before transferring to North Carolina prior to the start of the 2008 season. The Tar Heels reached the College Cup Final that year, only to fall to a Maryland team led by A.J. DeLaGarza and Omar Gonzalez. The brother of current D.C. United midfielder Dax McCarty, he went on to appear in 60 games during his three years with the Tar Heels.

College Highlights

2010: Appeared in all 24 of the Tar Heels’ games as a senior, helping lead them to the College Cup semifinals for the third straight season. He started 23 games, tallying one assist, which came in the 2-0 win over Clemson on 11/5 in his final home game for UNC. 2009: Appeared in 20 games as a junior, starting each of the final 16 games of the year. He scored a career-high two goals, scoring once in the season opening win over UNC Asheville on 9/1 and then adding a second in the win over Stetson on 10/28. Helped the Tar Heels reach the College Cup semifinals, and started all four of their games in the NCAA Tournament. 2008: Transferred to North Carolina prior to the start of the season and helped the Tar Heels reach the College Cup Final. Made his Tar Heel debut on 8/29, scoring in a 3-0 win over Florida International on 8/29. He tallied his first assist for UNC in the 8-0 win over East Tennessee St. on 9/27 and then added a second on 10/25 in an overtime loss to Clemson. He missed much of the end of the season with a broken hand, but returned to play in each of the final four games of the postseason, including the College Cup Final against Maryland. 2007: Made 17 appearances as a freshman at Central Florida, making 15 starts and scoring once while assisting on another. He collected the first assist of his college career on 9/12 in a 2-1 loss to Stetson. He scored his first goal two days later on 9/14, helping the Knights earn a 1-1 draw with Memphis. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team that year.
