New York City FC have signed Luis Barraza, their top 2019 SuperDraft selection (No. 12 overall), to a professional contract, the club announced Monday. NYCFC sent $75,000 of General Allocation Money to LA Galaxy to move up from No. 19 to No. 12 to select the goalkeeper.

Barraza, 22, starred at Marquette University for four seasons, making 53 appearances in his collegiate career. He won Big East Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018 and was named to the First Team All-Big East Conference.

“It’s one of the happiest moments of my life without a doubt,” Barraza said in a statement. “I’m thankful for everyone that’s helped me get to where I am today. Most importantly my family who has supported and believed in me since day one."

Barraza joins Sean Johnson, Jeff Caldwell and Brad Stuver as goalkeepers on NYCFC's 2019 roster.

“Luis is a very good goalkeeper with a bright future," technical director Claudio Reyna said. "He’s someone who we really like and adds more depth to the goalkeeper position. We think it’s really valuable in MLS to have a very solid corps of goalkeepers pushing each other. We’re just happy to give Luis an opportunity to realize his dream and to now be an important part of his life as a Club. We want to look after him, push him and develop him to make his career take the right steps forward.”
