Michael de Leeuw's time with the Chicago Fire has officially come to an end.

Eredivisie side FC Emmen announced on Monday that they had signed the Dutch goalscorer, whose contract option was declined by Chicago following the 2018 season. Though the Fire announced they were negotiating with de Leeuw at the end of last month, he ultimately decided to sign in his home country, where he will also be reunited with former head coach Dick Lukkien.

Signed to a three-year deal using Targeted Allocation Money in 2016, de Leeuw made 57 appearances for Chicago, scoring 12 goals and adding 13 assists. An ACL injury suffered at the end of the 2017 regular season sidelined him for over 10 months. He returned to the field in August, making nine appearances for the Fire this past season, chipping in two goals and two assists.
